APS, Bernalillo County to Dedicate Student-painted Mural at Youth Services Center
Renowned artist Emanuel Martinez designed mural, worked with students

What: Albuquerque Public Schools and Bernalillo County will honor Denver-based artist Emanuel Martinez and recognize 12 students who attend the Juvenile Detention Center school at the dedication of their recently completed mural. Martinez designed the mural and students painted most of the work, which takes up a wall of the school cafeteria.

The project is a collaborative effort between the Emanuel Project, APS and the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center. It’s part of Martinez’s national mission to turn kids’ lives around through art, the way art turned his own life around.

In addition to district and county officials, actor Steven Michael Quezada of the TV series Breaking Bad is scheduled to appear to address the students.

Who: APS Board of Education Member Lorenzo Garcia; Deputy County Manager Tom Swisstack; JDC Principal Adele Evans; actor Steven Michael Quezada; and artist Emanuel Martinez

When: 10 a.m., Monday, August 27

Where: Bernalillo County Youth Services Center (JDC) school cafeteria, 5100 Second St. NW
