Foothills Area Command Crime Prevention 2012 Year-End Review

Post  Admin on Sun Dec 30, 2012 12:09 pm

We are forwarding this on behalf of APD.

Dear Foothills Area Command Neighbors,

It has been an eventful year here in the Foothills Area Command. I’d like to take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights for Crime Prevention/Crime Free Multi-Housing in the Foothills Area Command that occurred in 2012.

• 103 community meetings/crime prevention presentations
• 49 Safety/Security Assessment visits conducted
• 727 personal letters to residential burglary victims offering crime prevention Safety/Security Assessments
• 2,430 copies of Crime View maps, crime stats, calls for service reports provided to the public and Crime Free Multi-Housing partners
• Extended invitations to 100+ prospective partners to the Crime Free Multi-Housing program. Certified 6 apartment properties into the Crime Free Multi-Housing program. Partnered with apartment management teams to keep their properties safer and to join forces in an effort to keep criminal activity out of their rental properties.
• Placed 113 Periodic Watch Requests for the public.
• 108 tips turned over to specialized units for follow-up
• Conducted 16 Neighborhood Watch Facilitation Meetings and formed 6 new Neighborhood Watch groups – neighbors looking out for neighbors is one of our best crime prevention tools!
• 84 informational fliers sent to community partners in 2012
• Hosted and spoke at White Collar Crimes workshops and Robbery Awareness workshops to benefit the Foothills community
• Tutored 11 citizens one-on-one on how to use Crime View to enable citizens to track crime – an excellent resource for neighborhood association leaders and individual citizens
• Assisted 17 citizens moving to our city with crime information
• Participated in Albuquerque Block Captain Association training sessions, Children’s Safety Fairs, and other community events
• Visited with neighbors at 4 National Night Out events
• Participated in Matheson Elementary School’s Reading Day, Apache Elementary School’s Reading Day, Red Ribbon Week Door Decoration Judging, Fall Fiesta, Albuquerque Aloft/Balloon Fiesta event, 11 classroom visits with officers and McGruff to local elementary school classrooms, volunteered to serve Thanksgiving lunch to students and their families, hosted our partner elementary classroom at the station for Christmas carols and making Christmas cards for our officers
• 11 crime prevention presentations to local Cub Scouts
• Volunteer coordinator for our Officer Appreciation Day at the Foothills – a day to honor our hard-working officers and invite the public to meet our staff and officers
• Assisted with hosting an Open House at the station to welcome Commander Kevin Rowe to the Foothills Area Command family
• Formed 16 partnerships with local businesses and taught businesses crime prevention, safety/security and robbery awareness prevention
• Worked with 4 local churches teaching members crime prevention principles and conducted safety/security assessments
• Visited several local senior communities to present crime prevention geared toward seniors and brought White Collar Crime workshops to their living centers
• Supported multiple special projects throughout the year with producing mini-fliers with crime prevention tips, engaging with shoppers one-on-one at Foothills retail outlets, and outreach efforts
• Volunteered to assist Chaplain Collymore with our 2nd Annual Foothills Area Command Holiday Food Challenge. We were able to partner with the community to feed over 130 needy families over the holiday break. This would not have been possible without the community’s help, from donating a can of food at a time to the many monetary and in-kind donations from neighborhood association, individual donors and local businesses.

As we progress into 2013, I’d like to thank all of you who have been so supportive. The partnership with the area command has been truly rewarding. There are many other events, touching moments, and astonishing acts of kindness and courage that I have been privileged to be a part of or have witnessed through our police officers that are not known or publicized, but have been heart-warming and inspiring nonetheless. The citizens of this community make it a joy for me to come to work every day and strive for excellence. I will continue to do my best for you in 2013!

Happy New Year and Stay Safe in 2013,
Jill Garcia, Crime Prevention Specialist
Foothills Area Command, APD
