From APD: Package & Delivery Theft Prevention During the Holidays
Received from APD:
I’d like to provide you with crime prevention tips regarding packages being stolen from porches. This is a crime of opportunity and by taking a few precautions or changing habits you may avoid being a victim. Many of these crimes occur during the day and I am asking neighbors to watch out for neighbors.
If you see a delivery truck in your neighborhood and a vehicle following or unfamiliar subjects on foot following the truck’s route, get a good description and call 242-COPS (2677). Get as much descriptive information as you can and call from a place where you are safe. Our officers need to know type of vehicle (make/model/2 or 4 doors/color/license plate), direction of travel and address or intersection. Our dispatchers will need to know gender, approximate height/weight, hair color, clothing description, anything that stands out such as tattoos, facial hair, possibly carrying backpacks/gym bags – anything you can think of to assist our officers when they get dispatched to your location.
Here are some tips to avoid being a victim:
• Give the shipper specific delivery times when you will be home
• Have your package delivered to your work address, or to a trusted family member or neighbor’s home if they are home all day and will accept delivery for you
• Have the package sent to the local delivery company’s warehouse and pick it up yourself
• Ask if your shipper will request a signature upon delivery
• Consider insuring the package
• Obtain tracking information from the shipper
• Contact the company you ordered from and the shipper if you suspect your package may have been stolen
• Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your porch if you’ll be out of town for packages, newspapers, door-hangers left on your doorknob
Please stay safe and watch out for each other!
