From APD:

Dear Foothills Area Command Neighborhood Leaders, Neighborhood Watches, and Apartment Community Managers,

The APD Foothills Area Command is asking for your eyes on the block and in your areas once again. We are noticing common traits in local copper/metal thefts in our area, especially along the Juan Tabo corridor. If you are aware of these traits, you may be in a position to help our officers catch or prevent these types of thefts.

Here’s what you need to know about recent cases in the Foothills:

When: Offenders are hitting at night

Targets: Businesses, restaurants, public buildings (libraries)

Suspects: Carrying backpacks, tools, hammers, wire cutters, cable – 2 suspects were picked up carrying these items this morning by our graveyard officers

Suspects we picked up this morning: 2 males; 1 lived in the area in an apartment complex and the other in southern NM

Both suspects were out on probation and are now arrested and charged with felonies (NOTE: apartment managers – are you doing backgrounds on who you allow to live at your property? Are you doing them more frequently than just when they fill out the application? Are you keeping tabs on live-ins/’guests’ of who is on the lease?)

Suspects went to a nearby house as if they were visiting that home and left their backpack full of burglary tools and cables in the home owner’s bushes by his front door. (NOTE: Home owners – check your fencing/gates to
keep intruders out, check your lighting to make sure an offender can’t hide on your property, check surveillance if you have it for visitors at night, report found items to APD’s 242-COPS)

This is where you come in – we need you to be willing to report to 242-COPS or 911 (if in progress or suspects on scene committing burglary) and to be watchful in your neighborhoods about this type of activity.

This type of theft is costing our local businesses plenty in dollars, productivity and lost revenue. In one case, $150 worth of wire was stolen, yet the business had repair costs of $20,000. This type of theft can cripple a business and shut down productivity until repairs can be made.

Please watch for suspicious activity as you are out and about near businesses, restaurants, public buildings, etc. at night and be willing to call 242-COPS (2677) from a place where you are safe.

Thanks for your support of our officers and the Crime Prevention programs in the Foothills – we appreciate it!
