Neighborhood Watch:
How you help your neighbors and police One of our Foothills Neighborhood Watch Block Captains let me know that on the 19th of May one of the block watch members happened to look out their window and spotted two males attempting to break into the home next door through a side window. The alert Neighborhood Watch member contacted, APD, the home owner and the Block Captain . Police were there within minutes. This is Neighborhood Watch in action!

If you have been reading my messages, you will know that burglars are targeting homes by prying screens off windows at the back of homes versus kicking in the front door. You will also know from my messages that the majority of residential burglaries are occurring on week days during mid-day hours.

APD Crime Prevention asks for Neighborhood Watch groups to hold a few social events throughout the year to maintain unity, to use the Block Captain as a point of contact and to call in any suspicious or criminal activity to APD from a safe place.

Neighborhood Watch is NOT about forming patrols, asking citizens to enforce laws, detaining subjects, following or chasing people or vehicles. The cornerstone to Neighborhood Watch is being a good neighbor and looking out for one another.

National Night Out: First Tuesday Night of August
I have received several inquiries about National Night Out and requests
to attend Foothills Area Command group events. To register your group's event, call the Citizens Contact Center (dial 311).

National Night Out events are open to apartment communities too -- call the Citizens Contact Center by dialing 311 to register your event.

Property Crime in the Foothills
Stolen Vehicles: Some of our auto burglary cases involved damage to the ignition, indicating an attempt to steal the vehicle. Lock up and do not leave windows 'cracked' to ventilate an unattended vehicle . Do not leave the keys in the ignition to run a 'quick' errand. Auto theft is a crime of opportunity - harden your target to reduce your odds of being a victim!

Residential Burglaries: Last week's cases showed a continuing trend of unforced entries (unlocked doors/ windows) and entries made by prying off screens and entering homes through unlocked windows at the back of the homes. I recommend purchasing anti-lift/ anti-slide mechanisms for windows and sliding glass doors on ground levels. Most retailers will have several for you to learn about and chose from to reduce your odds
of a break-in.

Auto Burglaries: What items were stolen from unattended vehicles last week? Purses, wallets , IDs, and a gym bag with clothing.

Apartment and shopping center parking lots near freeways are being targeted - call 242-COPS (2677) if you see anyone casing vehicles.
Remove all items when you exit your vehicle and lock up.

CRIMESTOPPERS CRIME ALERT
On January 23, 2014 two heavy-set Hispanic females went to a NE residence impersonating as nurses with Lovelace Hospital. The owners of the residence, who are elderly, allowed them into their home. While inside the elderly couple believed something was suspicious, while one of the females spoke to them the other one walked around their residence. The two females also had a young adolescent girl with them and were seen driving a gray minivan.

After the females left with the little girl, the elderly male noticed his gold LSU class ring and his gold pocket watch were gone.

On May 28, 2014 two heavy-set Hispanic females and a young adolescent girl went to a residence on Shoshone Rd NE impersonating as nurses with ABQ Partners. Again the couple that live in the residence are elderly and they allowed the alleged nurses and the little girl inside. While inside one of the females was "casing" the residence. After being told to leave, they were seen driving away in a gray minivan. The couple was unable to get a license plate number.

It is believed the suspects from the January incident are the same as the suspects in the May incident, given the same description on the two females with a young child in a gray minivan.
