There were three fire trucks, three ambulances, several polce cars and a MedEvac helicopter at the end of Comanche this afternoon. Two young men were hiking in the foothills, one from our neighborhood and one from nearby. One of them fell in the steep rocks and injured himself. Apparently he was knocked out briefly and then unable to make his own way down the mountain. The first emergency vehicle to arrive (I am told) was the Bernalillo County Fire and Rescue crew. On the way up the mountain one of the crew members broke an ankle and had to be rescued also. He was removed from the mountain on a stretcher. Well over an hour's effort was required to secure the injured young man and remove him from the mountain. The rescue involved first aid at the scene, securing him to a stretcher, and rigging a rope line to move move him to an area where the crew could carry the stretcher. I believe he was then taken by helicopter to the hospital.
