Foothills Area Command Crime Prevention: April 18, 2014
Please share with your NA/ HOA memberships, Neighborhood Watch groups, Crime Free Multi-Housing property management teams and residents.
Please welcome our newest Neighborhood Watch Group: 1700-block of Father Sky Court NE!
This was a very well-attended facilitation meeting and the gathering was fun. Thank you to the group for sending back cookies to the Foothills officers.
We now have 13 more homes willing to be 'eyes and ears' on the block!
No Solicitation signs - A great idea from a community leader:
Since the Foothills substation ran out of "No Solicitors" signs, one of our community leaders with the City Council District 8 Coalition of Neighborhoods suggests copying an existing sign you may have already received from an APD substation onto card stock and distributing the copied signs to your neighbors if you are disturbed by door-to-door solicitors or want to make a "No Solicitors" sign a part of a 'welcome ' packet for new neighbors on your block.
May is Law Enforcement Memorial Month :
I will have fliers in the Foothills Substation lobby on events for May.
There will be a memorial ceremony on Tuesday, May 6th at noon on Civic Plaza open to the public . Call the Citizens Contact Center at 31 1 for more information. You may see blue ribbons being worn in May to honor our fallen officers. To volunteer for events or learn more, contact Marcia Gallegos at: margal05@yahoo.com. To learn more about this on the national level, see http://www.nleomf .com/
Vandalism/Teens "Egging" from Vehicle Trunks:
I have heard about teens near the Foothills Area Command riding in car trunks. The driver stops the vehicle in front of a home and the driver releases the car trunk latch for the kids in the trunk to pelt the home with eggs as a 'surprise attack'. Although the act is destructive, the potential for tragedy with a young and inexperienced driver and a car load of friends stuffed in the vehicle trunk and being struck in a rear-ender or other type of accident and the needless potential for serious injury or even loss of life is horrifying . Please talk about these silly and dangerous stunts as a family to head off a potential tragedy.
Call 242-COPS (2677) if you see this type of activity in your neighborhood.
Credit Card Scam: One of our Foothills Neighborhood Watch Block Captains alerted me to a phone scam circulating in the area. The caller is identifying him/ herself as part of a law enforcement agency and threatening to arrest the person at their home or place of work unless they make a payment by credit card for a past-due debt within 30 minutes of receiving the phone call.
Law enforcement will not contact citizens as collectors of past-due debt. Do not give out your credit card, bank account, or personal information to anyone over the telephone.
Albuquerque Block Captain Association Conference:
The conference is coming up! Although hosted by ABCA and geared towards Block Captains, it is open to all. Contact APD Crime Prevention Manager Steve Sink (924-3600) if you have questions about the ABCA conference.
Saturday, May 10th from 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Location: APD Academy at 5412 Second Street NW ijust south of Montano) Parking is on site and free of charge
Thanks again for your support of the Crime Prevention programs and our Foothills officers, staff and lead ership.
