Foothills Area Command Crime Prevention : July 18, 2014

Good morning APD Foothills Area Command community leaders, Neighborhood Associations, Neighborhood Watch Block Captains and Crime Free Multi-Housing partners,

This week’s crime prevention message has our crime reported over the past week and some tips on how to reduce your odds of being a victim, a great idea from one of our Neighborhood Watch Block Captains, information on how to get your event registered for National Night Out and some upcoming events in our area, a VIN etching, a community school supply/backpack/shoe drive we are working on and a fun Bike Rodeo next Saturday. Please share with your memberships, family, friends and neighbors.

Foothills Area Command Crime Prevention : July 18, 2014

Neighborhood Watch:
One of our Foothills Neighborhood Watch Block Captains is spreading the word about a Driveway Sensor Alarm. This tool is about $25 and alerts residents when someone is in their driveway. Using this tool, an alert Foothills resident was able to call police from inside his home and officers were able to make an arrest. Multiple stolen items from vehicles were recovered and returned to victims thanks to one of the neighbors using this handy device. Thank you Linda C for the information!

Special Notice - The Foothills Area Command needs your help:
The APD Foothills Speed Trailer tires were slashed between Friday, July
11 and Monday, July 14 -while parked at the north east comer of Tramway and Candelaria (on Candelaria).

If any citizen thinks they may have witnessed this incident, please contact 242-COPS (2677) to have an officer dispatched or call the Foothills Substation at 332-5240 and ask to speak to the supervisor on duty to provide a description.

Upcoming Summer Events:
VIN Etching: Saturday, July 26 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Sportsmen's Warehouse, 1450 Renaissance Blvd (rear parking area).

VIN etching can help prevent auto thefts. It only takes a few minutes to complete while APD Auto Theft detectives etch your VIN number on your vehicle windows. Bring your vehicle registration with you - this service is free of charge.

Bike Rodeo for school. age boys and girls: Saturday, July 26th Sandia Presbyterian Church at 10704 Paseo Del Norte from 9:00 - Noon . This event is open to school age boys and girls to learn bicycle safety.
There will be bicycle and helmet inspections, a rock climbing wall, equipment displays and a fun collection of crazy bicycles! See the attached press release and flier for more information .

Operation Hope/ Children's Cancer Fund of NM School Supply Backpack and Gift Cards for School Shoes Drive:
Collecting donations now through Saturday, August 2nd
On Saturday, August 2 the Foothills Substation lobby will be open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm to accept donations. Donations may also be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the substation. A flier is attached.

Property Crime in the Foothills: Fri 7/ 11 through Thu 7/ 17 Stolen Vehicles: Motorcycle parked outside overnight was stolen in the Foothills Area Command this week. Contact me for suggestions on how to protect property.

Auto Burglaries:
Items stolen from vehicles since Friday: Multiple Firearms - Driver's
Licenses - Social Security Cards - Credit Cards - Cash - Purses
- Wallets - Diaper Bag - Clothing - Backpack s -Medications -
Tools - Golf Clubs - Glasses -Make Up

One of the above auto burglaries occurred while the victim was at the gas station while the vehicle doors were unlocked and the windows were rolled down. Another occurred while the victim's garage door was open.

Use caution where ever you go. These are crimes of opportunity - don't allow an opportunity for 9- criminal to victimize you.

Residential Burglaries:
Unforced entries into homes continue through doggie doors and unlocked front doors.

What has been stolen since Friday? Multiple firearms, jewelry, washer/ dryer set, shoes, TVs, laptops and flooring, carpets, curtain rods were damaged in a vacant home by offenders.

Watch out for one another and report suspicious activity to the APD non­ emergency number 242-COPS from a place where you are safe or a crime in progress to 911.

Fortify your home - I call help you by visiting with an officer for about 45 minutes to see your home and leave you with a checklist of suggestions. Call me to set up an appointment for an assessment.

Boy Scouts of America Pack 241 and Girl Scouts of the USA Troop 10303 Host Annual Bike Rodeo and Climbing Wall Event
Free bike inspections, bicycle safety training and climbing wall for all grade-school aged area children on July 26

Albuquerque, NM (June 25, 2014) - Pack 241 of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) Troop 10303 are hosting a Bike Rodeo and Climbing Wall event on Saturday, July 26, 2014, from 9 a.m.-12 Noon at the Sandia Presbyterian Church parking lot at 10704 Paseo del Norte NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. This year's BSA Pack 241I GSUSA Troop 10303 Bike Rodeo is once again sponsored by Performance Bicycle, the nation's largest independent cycling retailer,and for the second year by the Albuquerque Police Department's Northeast Area Command Bike Unit, and Sky Cycles.

New supporters of the event include Sandia Presbyterian Church, the Albuquerque Police Department's Foothills Area Command Bike Unit, Target Coq or9tioQ, and the City of Albuquerque's Parks & Recreation Department. While this event is a scheduled summer activity for Pack 241 and Troop 10303 members, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts welcome all area grade-school youth to attend this free event.

''Though this event has grown in size and scope over the last couple of years, the mission of the Rodeo remains the same - teaching kids about the importance of bike safety," said Tim Brown, Cubmaster for BSA Pack 241. "We greatly appreciate Performance Bicycle and the Albuquerque Police Department's involvement again this year in our event, and welcome our new supporters, Sandia Presbyterian, Target Corporation, and the City of Albuquerque."

"Children need to understand how to safely ride their bikes when on the roads and even in their own driveways," said Kristine Willhite, Leader of GS Troop 10303. ''The addition of the City of Albuquerque's climbing wall will make for a whole new level of fun and education to this year's event, especially since the sport of rock climbing is built on rules of safety and responsibility."

Performance Bicycle's certified Spin Doctor Mechanics will also be onsite to give free safety inspections. Spin Doctors will provide general tips for ongoing bicycle maintenance and basic repairs, as well as give each child a size and safety fitting for their bicycle.

ABQ Boy Scouts and Girt Scouts Partner to Teach Bike Safety
"A safety inspection is a great way to check that bicycles are properly maintained and ready for summer," said Heather McQueen, Performance Bicycle's store manager. "Our Spin Doctors will perform a free 25 point inspection and look over every part of the bicycle, including the gears, brakes, tires and wheels to make sure they are in working order."

The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation officials, and the Bike Officers of the Albuquerque Police Department Northeast Area Command will be on hand to conduct real-world training on traffic rules, signs and hand signals. The officers are well versed in bicycle traffic training and awareness, and regularly conduct safety-training seminars to educate the public.

Equipment from the Albuquerque Fire Department will also be on display, and volunteers from the AFD will be onsite to answer fire-safety questions. Sky Cycles will once again have their unique bike collection on display as well at the event.

Kids who don't ride bikes can also join the fun. Scooters, skateboards or any wheeled transport are welcome to join the rodeo.

APD Operation Hope and Children 's Cancer Fund of NM School Supply Drive

APD substations are collecting donated school supplies, backpacks and gift cards for shoe purchases for needy children grades K- 12 who are fighting cancer.
