Don’t let a Grinch Steal Your Holiday Packages!
Holiday Season Tips to Avoid Stolen Packages:


• Give the shipper specific delivery times when you will be home.
• Have your package delivered to your work address, to a trusted family member, or to a neighbor’s home if they are home all day and are willing to accept delivery for you.
• Have the package sent to the local delivery company’s warehouse and pick it up yourself.
• Ask if your shipper will request a signature upon delivery.
• Consider insuring the package.
• Obtain tracking information from the shipper.
• Contact the company you ordered from and the shipper if you suspect your package may have been stolen.
• Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out on your home and to collect any packages, newspapers, advertisements or door-hangers from your porch.

APD Foothills Area Command - December 2013 Information to Share


Residential Burglaries in the Foothills:
I checked on residential burglaries in the Foothills Area Command from November 29 – December 3 to get a snapshot of activity:

• 8 residential burglaries occurred in that time frame
• 5 of the 8 residential burglaries were to apartments
• Of those 5, 2 were at the same apartment complex
• 3 of the residential burglaries were to single family homes

How did the burglars make entry? Through an unlocked front door, a garage door, through windows, and through a back door.

Please lock up! Add anti-lift/anti-slide devices to windows. Lock garages too; the garage is a way into your home.

Call 242-COPS (2677) to report tampering with doors/windows or ‘casing’ activity from a safe place – don’t confront or follow subjects.


Vandalism/Theft of Holiday Decorations:
I checked a random date, December 1st, for the Foothills Area Command vandalism calls. We had several throughout the entire Area Command reported that day, from 1:59 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

What was targeted? Mailboxes, vehicles, and walls were tagged.

I’ve received word from one Foothills resident about holiday decorations being stolen. Sadly, these are not immune to theft.

Work with your neighbors to agree to report suspicious or criminal activity. When calling 242-COPS you can be anonymous and you can request contact with the officer after the call has been completed.

Neighbors who care about each other are more willing to look out for one another. Be that neighbor!
Package Thefts from Porches: I’ve attached an informational flier for you to share.

Copper Thefts
We have a new service in place for citizens to make confidential tips on copper thefts via Crime Stoppers.

Here’s how to submit a tip:

One recent case in particular highlights the repercussions of this type of crime: the business had $150 worth of copper wiring stolen, yet the business suffered a $20,000 loss in repairs due to the theft.

This is a serious loss to our business community and dangerous too; the offender in one case must have been badly burned and there were burn marks that went through metal.

If you own a business, consider installing surveillance cameras, posting signage, making sure your wire boxes are secure, and inform employees that they are your ‘eyes on the property.’ These types of crimes have a ripple effect and severely impact on our community.

Evidence Disposition
APD’s web site will be posting notice of items of evidence that are ready to be released to legal owners of the property. Please check the APD web site at www.cabq.gov/police under the Legal Notice heading. The lists will be updated as items come up for release and each list will be posted for 30 days.
